FAQ

Q. What's the difference between a professionally administered IQ test and one that I take online?

A. There are no official IQ tests online.  Some have some degree of accuracy, some are completely invalid.  Validating an IQ test requires administration to thousands of carefully selected individuals under controlled conditions.  No online test has been developed with this level of care.  Also, most online tests require you to read material -- reading is completely eliminated from individually administered IQ tests to prevent low scores due to dyslexia.

Q. Can you give an official test online or over the phone?

A. IQ tests measure both verbal and non-verbal abilities.  The non-verbal tests require that you see and manipulate test materials.  Another advantage of an in-person test is that I can see if other factors are affecting your score and make a judgment about the validity of the results.

Q. What information will I get from intelligence test report?

A. Your IQ is a good indicator of how capable you are of understanding academic material and whether you are able to understand high school, college, or graduate-level material.  Your pattern of scores will show your strengths and weaknesses, your learning style, and show how to compensate for problem areas.  You'll be able to see whether you learn better through words or through visual information and whether you are better at reasoning step-by-step or holistically.

Q. Will I be surprised?  Will I find that I'm an undiscovered genius?  Or that I'm much less intelligent than I think?

A. If you graduated high school after attending regular classes and you achieved average grades, chances are you are at least in the average range of intelligence, 90 to 109.  College graduates generally have at least high average intelligence, 110-119, and persons with doctorates tend to score in a superior range, in the 120's.  IQs above 130 are  rare.  There are occasionally surprises when measuring IQ.  If you feel that a lower-than-expected score would disturb you, you might be better off not taking the test.  However, you should also realize that life achievements are a more meaningful measure of ability and potential than the score on an IQ test, or any test.

Q. Will Mensa accept the score you provide?

A. I have done testing for admission to Mensa and they accept the scores I provide.  A score of 131 or higher on the Wechsler tests qualifies.

Q. What ages do you test?

A. Ages 6 to 89.
